Both the Hummer EV Pickup and F-150 Lightning have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Hummer EV Pickup has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The F-150 Lightning’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

The GMC Hummer EV Pickup’s Surround Vision offers optional integrated front and rear camera washers, ensuring clear, all-weather visibility without the need for manual cleaning. In contrast, the Ford F-150 Lightning lacks camera washers, requiring you to manually clean the cameras for optimal performance.

The Hummer EV Pickup 2X’s standard electric motors produces 6625 lbs.-ft. more torque (7400 vs. 775) than the F-150 Lightning’s electric motors. The Hummer EV Pickup 2X’s optional electric motors produces 55 more horsepower (635 vs. 580) and 8725 lbs.-ft. more torque (9500 vs. 775) than the F-150 Lightning’s electric motors. The Hummer EV Pickup 3X’s standard electric motors produces 250 more horsepower (830 vs. 580) and 10725 lbs.-ft. more torque (11500 vs. 775) than the F-150 Lightning’s electric motors. Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Hummer EV Pickup has larger tires than the F-150 Lightning (305/70R18 vs. 275/65R18).

The GMC Hummer EV Pickup’s wheels have 8 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength. The Ford F-150 Lightning only has 6 wheel lugs per wheel.

The Hummer EV Pickup has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The F-150 Lightning doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

Suspension and Handling

The front and rear suspension of the Hummer EV Pickup uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the F-150 Lightning, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The Hummer EV Pickup has a standard driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads. The F-150 Lightning’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The Hummer EV Pickup has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Hummer EV Pickup’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The F-150 Lightning doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Hummer EV Pickup is 5.2 inches wider in the front and 5 inches wider in the rear than on the F-150 Lightning.

For better maneuverability, the Hummer EV Pickup’s turning circle is 10.7 feet tighter than the F-150 Lightning’s (37.1 feet vs. 47.8 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Hummer EV Pickup has a 7.5 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the F-150 Lightning (15.9 vs. 8.4 inches), allowing the Hummer EV Pickup to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Chassis

The Hummer EV Pickup is 1 foot, 3.9 inches shorter than the F-150 Lightning, making the Hummer EV Pickup easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The front grille of the Hummer EV Pickup uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The F-150 Lightning doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

Passenger Space

The Hummer EV Pickup has 1.7 inches more front headroom and 1.7 inches more front legroom than the F-150 Lightning.

Cargo Capacity

The GMC Hummer EV Pickup has a standard tailgate assist feature, which folds out and allows for much easier access to the cargo area. A Tailgate Step costs extra on the Ford F-150 Lightning.

The Hummer EV Pickup has an all welded cargo box to eliminate possible corrosion spots and to provide better chassis stiffness. The cargo box in the F-150 Lightning is bolted through the bed to the frame with large bolts. These bolts are a prime area for corrosion to start as the normal flexing of the truck’s chassis causes them to eat through the finish; they can also snag cargo as it slides in and out.

Towing

The Hummer EV Pickup’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the F-150 Lightning’s (12100 vs. 7700 pounds).

Ergonomics

The Hummer EV Pickup’s front and rear power windows all lower with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The F-150 Lightning’s rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to open them fully.

On a hot day the Hummer EV Pickup’s driver can lower all the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the F-150 Lightning can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Hummer EV Pickup’s standard Keyless Open and Start allow you to unlock the doors from any outside door handle, unlock the tailgate, and start the truck, all without removing the key from the pocket or purse. Push Button Start standard on the F-150 Lightning only offers hands-free access for the ignition, none to unlock the truck. Push Button Start is not available on the F-150 Lightning Flash/Lariat/Platinum.

The Hummer EV Pickup’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The F-150 Lightning’s standard intermittent wipers change speed with vehicle speed, but can’t turn on and off or change speed based on changing rainfall.

The Hummer EV Pickup’s standard outside mirrors include heating elements to clear off the mirrors for better visibility. Ford charges extra for heated mirrors on the F-150 Lightning.

When the Hummer EV Pickup is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The F-150 Lightning’s mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.

The GMC Hummer EV Pickup has power folding mirrors that offer unparalleled convenience while maneuvering in tight places or parked. With the mirrors folded it’s easier to walk past and help prevent parking damage. The mirrors can be quickly unfolded when the driver is ready to leave. Power folding mirrors are only offered on the F-150 Lightning Lariat/Platinum.

The Hummer EV Pickup has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel is only available on the F-150 Lightning STX/Flash/Lariat/Platinum.

The GMC Hummer EV Pickup has a standard Homelink wireless remote control system for garage door operation and device management, conveniently located on the driver’s visor. Homelink® eliminates the need for separate garage door openers and associated risks of losing, breaking, or having dead batteries. Homelink® is only available on the F-150 Lightning Lariat/Platinum.

The Hummer EV Pickup is equipped with both FM and AM stereo radios, offering access to more content and better coverage than the F-150 Lightning, which solely provides FM radio. With AM radio, you can enjoy a wider variety of stations featuring news, talk shows, sports commentary, native language programing, automated traffic guidance, and emergency broadcasts. AM waves travel further and penetrate buildings and obstacles more effectively than FM signals, especially at night. Having both FM and AM stereo radios the Hummer EV Pickup offers a more comprehensive listening experience compared to only FM in the F-150 Lightning.

HD Radio boasts several benefits over conventional radio: superior sound quality with clearer and consistent FM broadcasts, CD-quality audio, and Multicast Channels offering up to four streams from a single station, adding programming choices. Cars like the Hummer EV Pickup equipped with available HD Radio provide an improved in-car entertainment experience. The F-150 Lightning, devoid of this technology, foregoes these benefits. To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the GMC Hummer EV Pickup has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Only the F-150 Lightning Lariat/Platinum offers wireless charging.

Recommendations

Motor Trend performed a comparison test in its May 2023 issue and the GMC Hummer EV Pickup won out over the Ford F-150 Lightning Short Bed Lariat.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Hummer EV Pickup first among large light duty pickups in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The F-150 Lightning isn’t in the top three.
